Service Description

How Our Kiln Firing Service Works You’ll drop off your pieces, and once they’re loaded into the kiln, we’ll send you an invoice and potential pick-up dates/times. The cost depends on how much kiln space your pieces occupy. Pricing: Half shelf (9" x 20" x 5"): $15 Full shelf (20" x 20" x 5"): $24 Half kiln (2.1 cubic feet): $35 Full kiln (4.2 cubic feet): $55 There’s no minimum number of pieces required, but if your pieces don’t fill at least half a shelf ($15), there is a minimum firing fee of $10. Please note: if your pieces drip glaze onto the kiln shelves or furniture during firing, a minimum cleaning and repair fee of $5 will be charged. We do use kiln cookies to help prevent glaze drips whenever possible, but please let me know in advance if you think there may be any potential glaze issues or malfunctions with your piece. Clay & Firing Details Firing temperatures: Bisque firings are to Cone 04, and glaze firings are to Cone 5. We do not typically offer high firings. Clay type: Any Cone 6 clay is suitable for our kiln. Many of our artists purchase clay locally from Plainsman Pottery Supply in Edmonton. Scheduling & Wait Times Firing is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Typically, I aim to load pieces within two weeks from drop-off. However, during busy seasons (like the holidays), it may take a bit longer — so it’s always best to plan ahead. Firing Timeline & Pick-Up The firing and cooling process takes about two days from the firing date. For example, if your pieces are loaded on a Monday, they’ll typically be ready for pick-up on Wednesday. If you’re doing both a bisque and a glaze firing, remember your pieces will need to go through two separate firings, so please plan accordingly. While exact firing schedules can vary depending on workload and kiln availability, I make every effort to accommodate requested deadlines. Pick-Up/ Drop-off Hours: Weekday evenings: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 4:00–5:30 PM Saturdays: Generally 1:00–4:00 PM We now offer an optional service: for an additional $5 (per average mug) we can glaze your piece in clear for you, so you won’t need to come into the studio for that step. If you are new to glazes you’re welcome to come in and use our brushable studio glazes for $25 per hour. Because I run the studio part-time alongside a full-time job, I schedule pick-ups ahead of time to ensure availability. Please email info@plantedearthstudios.com to inquire.

Cancellation Policy

To cancel or reschedule a kiln firing, please provide at least 24 hours' notice prior to the scheduled drop-off time. Failure to provide timely notice may result in your pieces being fired, and no refunds will be issued. Damage to Pieces Planted Earth Studios is not liable for any damages, glaze color variations, or firing results that may occur during the kiln firing process. Ceramic firing is inherently unpredictable. Damage to Kiln or Kiln Furniture If your pieces drip glaze onto the kiln shelves or furniture during the glaze firing process, you will be charged a minimum fee of $5 to cover the cost of cleaning and repairs. To minimize this risk, please inform the artist if you believe your pieces are prone to glaze drips. They can use kiln cookies to protect the kiln shelves.
